Rana — The King of Jhalana

There are leopards you photograph.

And then there are leopards whose stories become part of the forest.

Rana is one of them.

Jhalana, tucked into the Aravalli landscape on the outskirts of Jaipur, is a remarkable wilderness where leopards have learned to thrive remarkably close to a massive urban environment. Over the years, individual leopards have become known by name to guides, photographers and regular visitors — and Rana has become one of the most iconic.

His story is one of transformation.

Rana was once known as a young male growing up under the shadow of his father, Bahadur, one of Jhalana’s established dominant males. As Rana matured, the young leopard began to challenge the existing order. His journey from a young male into a powerful territorial leopard has even been documented in Leopard Dynasty: The Rise of Rana.

Today, Rana is widely regarded as one of Jhalana’s dominant and most recognizable males. His presence has become almost legendary among those who spend time in this forest.

And then, one day, I found him walking towards me.

The forest was dark and enclosed. Dense vegetation formed a wall of green along the track, while the background disappeared into deep shadow.

And suddenly, Rana emerged.

His powerful shoulders moved effortlessly with every step. His golden coat caught the available light, while his rosettes disappeared and reappeared between patches of shadow.

But it was his expression that stayed with me.

That direct gaze.

That unmistakable confidence.

He wasn’t hiding.

He wasn’t rushing.

He simply walked through his territory as though the forest belonged to him.

And perhaps, in many ways, it does.

I pressed the shutter as he came towards me, capturing not just a leopard walking down a forest track, but a moment that represented the character of Jhalana itself — wild, resilient and completely unapologetic.

For a wildlife photographer, encounters like this are not just about getting a sharp photograph.

They are about witnessing an individual animal with a history.

A territory.

A lineage.

A personality.

And Rana carries all of that in his eyes.

Rana — the leopard who rose through the ranks of Jhalana and became one of its most iconic males.

Some photographs show an animal.

Some photographs tell you who he is.

This one, for me, is Rana.
