Kishanpur — Where the Forest Speaks

Some forests announce themselves with the roar of a tiger.

Others speak in silence.

Kishanpur is one of those forests.

Located in the Terai landscape of Uttar Pradesh, Kishanpur Wildlife Sanctuary forms an important part of the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve. Spread across roughly 203 square kilometres, it lies along the banks of the Sharda River and is surrounded by a beautiful mosaic of dense riparian forests, moist deciduous woodland, grasslands, streams and wetlands.

It is one of those places that can make you forget how close you are to civilisation.

The forest feels deep.

The trees rise on both sides of the tracks, their branches creating natural corridors through the wilderness. Sal, teak and jamun form much of the woodland, while open meadows and water bodies bring an incredible diversity of wildlife and birds into the landscape.

But for me, Kishanpur is not only about the animals.

It is about the atmosphere.

This photograph was made during one of those magical moments when the morning light found its way through the trees.

The forest around me was still dark, almost mysterious.

And then, in the distance, the entire track opened into a golden tunnel of light.

At the centre of that light was a small figure moving along the forest road.

Suddenly, the animal became almost secondary.

The forest became the story.

The misty golden light, the dark silhouettes of the trees and the winding track created a natural frame that seemed to lead straight into another world.

I deliberately kept the composition wide and allowed the animal to remain small within the frame. I wanted to show scale — to show how insignificant we are compared to the vastness of the forest.

Kishanpur is home to an impressive diversity of wildlife, including tigers, leopards, swamp deer, chital, wild boar and other species. Its wetlands also attract a remarkable variety of birds; the Uttar Pradesh Eco-Tourism Board notes around 450 resident and migratory bird species across Dudhwa Tiger Reserve, with many recorded around Kishanpur’s Jhadi Tai.

Yet sometimes, the most beautiful wildlife photograph is the one where the wildlife is almost hidden.

Because it reminds us that a forest is not just a collection of animals.

It is light.

It is silence.

It is trees breathing in the morning mist.

It is a road disappearing into the unknown.

And somewhere along that road, life continues quietly.

This is Kishanpur.

One of the most beautiful and atmospheric forests I have experienced in the Terai.

A place where sometimes, you don’t need a tiger in the frame to feel the presence of the wild.

You just need to look a little deeper.
